Product Description

| NEW COFFEE ALERT| FOR 1 MONTH ONLY | BIOGEOGRAPHY COFFEE – NORTH & SOUTH OF THE PALGHAT GAP

October is a super microlot month. We are extending a ‘first of its kind’ coffee we created for the International Biogeography Society’s India conference held in Bangalore last week. Don’t dawdle, see this : https://www.biogeography.in/

Why the geekiness?

The coolness of biogeography is evident when you discover how species vary and are distributed along geographic gradients of elevation, latitude and sometimes habitat isolation. In fact there is some eye-popping research from across India that shows how ‘barriers’ (forest fragmentation, mountains, rivers – anything that basically prevents the movement or distribution of a species or community from one locale to another) can lead to speciation/evolutionary amazingness over millennia. There are many intriguing biogeographers in India but Robin’s also a coffee addict so we can pull out his research and embarrass him a little. Robin’s research is one such example of how the birdsong (wait, the blooming birdsong!) of Shortwings varies across their habitat (lonely forest patches atop mountains). Robin calls these ‘sky islands’ – (Here’s more: http://skyisland.in/Home.html). Somewhere half way through this paragraph, we brewed a pour-over (South of the Gap) and got a bit carried away, so we meander back to the microlot now!

To summarise, we have sourced coffee North and South of one of the most prominent features of the Western Ghats – the Palghat Gap. The difference in flavour is immediately obvious between the two regions. An interesting aside is that the wine folks have been talking about biogeography for some time now – the evolutionary descent of certain grapes makes them as regionally distinct. Time for us coffee nerds to catch up!

We recommend both as filter coffees – do select a Medium-Fine grind at checkout for punchiest flavour.
